North eastern Minnesota contains the southern fringe of the boreal forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a remote canoe accessible region freckled with lakes and veined by rivers. With almost four million acres to explore there is endless opportunities to document the flora, fauna and landscapes of this stunning biome. Home to moose, loons, the largest population of grey wolves in the contiguous 48, Canada lynx and plethora of other species found only in the boreal ecosystem make this a photographers dream. Over the last 15 years I have dedicated my life to documenting these forests and lakes. It has become a big part of who I am and I know the region very intimately, which makes me very excited to offer this small-group workshop!

During this 8 day, 7 night all-inclusive adventure we will explore this incredible landscape from both land and water searching for wildlife, and wildflowers found only in the boreal biome, and watch fog lift from pristine lakes and rivers as summer takes over the Northwoods. Paddling by canoe is the most effective way to explore this region and provides opportunities to photograph stunning landscapes, common loons, moose, otters, beavers, eagles and many other species from the water. Each participant will have access to their own solo-canoe so they can explore and photograph from unique perspectives without the restriction of having a second photographer in the canoe. However, there are many glorious hikes leading overlooks showcasing the Boundary Waters and the stunning forests that dominate the boreal forest that we will also explore. It is in these forests we will find wildflowers, drumming ruffed grouse, and other wildlife that call this ecosystem home. Recently, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been dedicated as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, one of 13 in the world, and the largest. Astrophotography opportunities are endless, and if luck is on our side we can watch the aurora borealis dance across the sky.

During our stay we will be basing out of Gunflint Lodge, a breathtaking establishment near the end of the Gunflint Trail on Gunflint Lake. We will have one of their homes to ourselves, with each participant having their queen bed. Breakfast and lunch will be had in the field, followed by an afternoon break for relaxation, portfolio reviews and presentations if desired, then dinner at the lodge restaurant before we head back out for sunset. Gunflint lake can be explored by canoe or paddle board right the lodge. There is also a sauna and spa available for you to relax in at the end of the day. Each days itinerary will be catered by the participants interest and my suggestions based on what is happening with wildlife and atmospheric conditions. All you need to do is show up!

*The boreal forest is a demanding ecosystem to work in, and can be challenging. We will have an adventure of a lifetime, but there is no guarantee that we will see everything you hope for on this trip. We will put in the time and effort to document the fauna, flora and landscapes of the region, but we are at the mercy of mother nature and what she throws our way!

*The remaining balance is due 60 days before the starting day of the workshop.

*In light of Covid, masks will be required in the vehicle and all common spaces in the house as preventative measures. Hand sanitizer will be provided both in the vehicle and our house.
